KCF Donates Funds to Nonprofits

The Kentlands Community Foundation (KCF) presented funds raised from the 2017 Kentlands/Lakelands 5K at the Jan. 16 Mayor and City Council meeting. Executive Director Elisabeth Monaco presented the City of Gaithersburg with $11,000 for the Dolores C. Swoyer Camp Scholarship Fund.

Additional beneficiaries of the 5K include The Dwelling Place ($2,500) and Maryland Senior Olympics ($1,000).

Luca Devito Recognized for Winning 5K Art

Mayor Jud Ashman recognized Luca Devito, a fifth grader at Rachel Carson Elementary (RCES), at the Jan. 16 Mayor and City Council meeting. Devito won first prize overall in the annual Kentlands/Lakelands 5K student art competition, and her artwork appeared on the 2017 Kids Fun Run t-shirts.

Tom Marchessault Begins Second Term

Kentlands resident and photographer Tom Marchessault was reappointed as supervisor on the Gaithersburg Board of Elections at the Jan. 16 Mayor and City Council meeting. Marchessault begins his second term in this position.

Public Record Reopened for Kentlands Square Infill Sites

A resolution to grant approval of SDP-7712-2017 (Kentlands Square infill sites), proposing the construction of three commercial buildings in the Lowe’s parking lot, was not passed at the Jan. 16 Mayor and City Council meeting. Continued questions about the development of approximately 1.8 acres zoned MXD, especially the proposed drive through, resulted in a motion to reopen the public record indefinitely. This motion was unanimously approved. Share your thoughts on the proposed Kentlands Square infill sites by emailing them to cityhall@gaithersburgmd.gov.

Johnson Property SDP Approved

At its Jan. 16 meeting, the Mayor and City Council approved the schematic development plan (SDP) for the Johnson Property, located at located at Darnestown and Quince Orchard roads. The plan proposes 106 single-family homes, including 80 townhomes and 26 detached homes on a 14-acre parcel.

Troop 33036 from Rachel Carson Elementary will be selling Girl Scout Cookies around town in February and March. Look for them on Feb. 25, 2 to 4 p.m. at the Kentlands Lowe’s and on March 11, noon to 4 pm. at Party City in Kentlands.
