Arts Barn Reopens With Celebratory Drum Circle

Following several weeks of closure while the roof and HVAC system were replaced, the Arts Barn reopens to the public with a celebratory drum circle on Sunday, Oct. 6, 4 to 5 p.m. The event will be outdoors, weather permitting, or moved indoors if not. Visitors are invited to bring their own drum and a blanket or stool. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free, and no reservations are necessary.

Volksmarch Planned for Oct. 12

The Muddy Branch Alliance will host their second annual Volksmarch event along the Muddy Branch Trail, which parallels Muddy Branch stream, a tributary of the Potomac River. The free, non-competitive Volksmarch will take place on Saturday, Oct. 12 between 8 a.m. and noon.

Offering both a 5K and a 10K distance, the event’s start and finish are at Astra-Zeneca’s Discovery Meadows Child Development Center at 501 Ridge Dr., Gaithersburg.

Though free, participants must register online at or in person before they start the Volksmarch. Event t-shirts are also available for a nominal donation. Walkers of all ages and leashed dogs are welcome.

Oktoberfest Returns Oct. 13

Dust off your dirndl, grab your lederhosen and get ready to Prost! The City of Gaithersburg presents the 28th annual celebration of Oktoberfest on Sunday, Oct. 13 from noon to 5 p.m. The festival takes place in and around the Arts Barn, Kentlands Mansion and Kentlands Village Green and along Main Street and Market Square.

Enjoy performances by Alte Kameraden German Band and Alt-Washingtonia Bavarian Dancers. Savor traditional festival food while enjoying selections from Dogfish Head and other local microbreweries or sipping Maryland varietal wines.

Fall festivities include professional pumpkin carving and apple cider pressing demonstrations, free horse-drawn wagon rides, hands-on crafts, pumpkin and face painting, balloon twisting, bubbles, artists and crafters, family activities and strolling entertainers. Four stages of live entertainment feature variety bands and community groups. Be sure to stroll through
the business expo.

In addition to the lively events taking place throughout the festival grounds, there are also some special activities taking place indoors at the Arts Barn. In conjunction with the Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association and the Gaithersburg Artist Collective, the Arts Barn presents the third annual Plein Air Paint Out for those 12 and older. Works are painted outdoors during the festival, then exhibited at the Arts Barn toward the end of the day. Registration is required.

The Arts Barn is also hosting Ok-to-BOO-Fest with scavenger hunts, a costume contest, monster puppet making, and more throughout the afternoon.

Oktoberfest is hosted in partnership with Dogfish Head Alehouse. It is sponsored in part by BMW of Rockville. Admission and parking are free.

Bake Sale to Benefit Tree House

The 4th Annual Kids’ Halloween Bake Sale for The Tree House is planned for Sunday, Oct. 20, 2 to 4 p.m. The Tree House CAC of Montgomery County, Maryland provides critical services to abused and neglected kids. Kentlands Tree Lighting Sponsors Needed

Local businesses are already hard at work organizing the annual Kentlands Tree Lighting. This year’s event will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 6 to 7 p.m. In additional to the tree lighting, all can enjoy hot chocolate, caroling, musical performances, visits with Santa and more.
