Arts Barn Plans ‘Magical’ Spring Break

Children ages 7 to 11 will create their own worlds during the Arts Barn Spring Break Art Camp, “Magical Spring,” April 10 through 14. Board of Education Adopts $2.52B FY 2018 Operating Budget

The Board of Education approved on Tuesday, Feb. 14 a $2.52 billion Operating Budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2018. The request includes a $64.24 increase from Fiscal Year 2017, which will allow the district to manage significant enrollment growth and build the foundation and structure needed to ensure that all MCPS students are able to achieve at higher levels. A majority of the spending increase will be used to provide the same level of services to a growing number of students; fund ongoing salaries and benefits; and manage increasing operational costs. The request also includes $11.01 million in strategic priority accelerators focused on improving student performance while narrowing achievement gaps.

Join the Hockey Club

All Quince Orchard High School students and eighth graders in the Quince Orchard cluster are invited to join the QO High School Hockey Club, which will field a team in the Spring League at Rockville Ice Arena. The season runs from April 3 to June 1, and the games will be held Monday through Friday afternoons. The season will include nine games (no practices), and the top teams will also participate in a limited playoff. Fees are estimated to be $250 per player, but may be slightly higher/lower depending on the final number of players. Please contact Michelle Katon at QOhockey@gmail.com if you have a student who is interested.

Northwest Booster Club Has Got Mulch

Place your orders now for the Northwest High School Booster Club 18th Annual Mulch Sale. Proceeds benefit students at Northwest. Large bags containing shredded hardwood mulch are $5.25.  Free delivery is provided for pre-orders of 15 bags or more, and the Northwest football team can spread the mulch for you on Sunday, April 2 for an additional $3 per bag. Delivery to the school is Saturday, April 1. Apply Now for Elementary Immersion Programs

Applications for MCPS elementary school language immersion programs are now available. The application deadline for the 2017-2018 school year is Friday, May 5. Elementary school language immersion programs begin in kindergarten and are offered in Chinese, French and Spanish. The district offers three Spanish, two French and two Chinese elementary language immersion programs at seven sites in the county. For more information, visit www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org.

MCPS Won’t Change Transgender Policies

President Donald Trump recently rescinded Obama Administration guidance that said under federal Title IX protections, transgender students should be permitted to use the bathroom that correspond to their gender identity. Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) responded, stating that there will be no change to school policy; transgender students will continue to be permitted to use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender identity.
