QOHS Featured on FOX 5

The Quince Orchard High School (QOHS) community come out in force on Friday, Aug. 18 to be featured on a FOX 5 Zip Trip in downtown Crown. DJ Evan Dunmyer, a QO senior, spun tunes before Travis Tucker, American Idol season finalist and Manassas native, opened the show. The morning included interviews with QO coaches John Kelley and Paul Foringer, and a great show of school spirit from the QO Marching Band, Cheerleaders, Poms and the Red Army.

NWHS Wins MCPS Sportsmanship Award

Northwest High School was awarded the William “Duke” Beattie Sportsmanship Award for the 2016-2017 school year. Northwest tied with Seneca Valley High School for the Sportsmanship Award in 2013-2014. MCPS began this awards program for the 2002-2003 school year.

Many AP Scholars at NWHS

Some 332 Northwest High School students received AP Scholar Awards. This award is granted to students who receive a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

School Begins Sept. 5

More than 161,000 students will head back to school on Tuesday, Sept. 5 for the start of the 2017-2018 school year. More than 900 teachers have been hired, and there are 26 new principals who can’t wait to get to know their new students and families—including Deneise Hammond, new principal at Rachel Carson Elementary School.

New Report Cards for Elementary Students

MCPS has revised its report card and grading scale for the upcoming 2017-18 school year. The revisions are designed to more clearly convey student learning and provide additional information about learning skills or work habits. New features include A, B, C, D in grades 2–5; four report cards per year for kindergarten students; an overall subject grade (in addition to the end-of-year average and measurement topics per marking period); and reporting of key learning skills.
