Year-Round Lights Considered for Market Square

City Manager Tony Tomasello said that the city is considering a request by Kentlands Under the Lights organizers to make event lights more of a year-round feature of the city park. He told the mayor and City Council at its Aug. 21 meeting that the city is working on getting concept sketches and electrical estimates now.

Frederick J. Felton Neighborhood Matching Grants Awarded

Twenty-three communities were awarded $63,000 in matching grants for community improvements through the city’s Frederick J. Felton Neighborhood Matching Grants program. Communities have 18 months to complete their projects and submit receipts to the city. Awardees include the Colonnade at Kentlands Condominium ($4,000), Kentlands Citizens Assembly ($3,750), Kentlands Condominium Association ($1,160), Kentlands Ridge Condominium Association ($1,500), Oaks at Washingtonian Woods Condominium ($3,075), Quince Orchard Park Condominium I ($500), and Quince Orchard Park Condominium II ($1000).

Get Ready for the Labor Day Parade

The Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade returns to the streets of Olde Towne on Monday, Sept. 4, 1 p.m. Now in its 79th year, this rain or shine event includes ethnic dance groups, antique cars and fire trucks, clowns, high school marching bands, and an assortment of community groups, equestrian units, and more.

Due to the construction of Olde Towne Park Plaza, the parade route has shifted and is slightly shorter this year. The parade starts near the intersection of Diamond and Summit avenues, with the reviewing stand and concessions located at the turn from Diamond onto Russell Avenue. Most optimum viewing is along Russell Avenue.

Gaithersburg Chorus Celebrates 30th Anniversary

To commemorate its 30th anniversary, the Gaithersburg Chorus will hold an open house on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park. The non-audition ensemble formed in 1987. Come celebrate with the chorus and meet Chorus Director Daniel Hopkins, sample the fall season repertoire and enjoy some treats.
