Register for Gaithersburg Spring Chorus
The Gaithersburg Chorus, a non-audition ensemble, begins formal weekly rehearsals on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park. The chorus is a class, with sessions in the fall and spring. Director Daniel Hopkins and accompanist Ruth Bright provide weekly instruction on music theory, musicality and the mechanics of singing, including
vocalization, voice control, proper breathing technique and voice projection. Previous experience is not required. To register, visit www.gaithersburgmd.gov/recreation/classes-programs/gaithersburg-chorus. The class fee is $100 for City of Gaithersburg residents, $120 for non-residents.
GBF Poetry Contest Open Now
Students in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. are invited to enter the Gaithersburg Book Festival (GBF) Poetry Contest. The author must be a high school student at the time of entry and may only submit one poem that has not been published elsewhere. The poem should be one page, typewritten as single-spaced and 12-point Times New Roman. The deadline for submission is Feb. 21, 2019.
Up to 12 poems will be selected as finalists. The finalists will have their poems posted on the Gaithersburg Book Festival website prior to the book festival.
The top three poems will be announced at the Gaithersburg Book Festival on Saturday, May 18, 2019. First-, second-, and third-place winners will receive $250, $100 and $50 gift certificates, respectively, provided by the Johns Hopkins Montgomery County Campus. Registration Now Open for La Milla de Mayo
Is getting into shape your New Year’s resolution? If so, register now for La Milla de Mayo (The May Mile), planned for May 4, 2019, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Olde Towne Gaithersburg. The one-mile run/walk is perfect for those new to running and anyone who wants to improve their mile in a fun, block party atmosphere. Participants are invited to celebrate the completion of the race with music, food, Salsa dancing, and Cinco de Mayo festivities. Runners of all ages and levels are eligible to register
for this event. Free Kids Fun Runs kick off the race.
Register online through the Montgomery County Road Runners Club website, mcrrc.org/calendar-event/la-millade-mayo-2019. Race fees are $10 to $25. The race is presented by the city in partnership with the Montgomery County Road Runners Club. Through corporate sponsorships and donations, proceeds benefit the City’s Dolores C. Swoyer Camp Scholarship Fund, which provides summer camp registration fees for qualified youth.
