Holiday Giving Coalition Recognized

Mayor Jud Ashman recognized Holiday Giving Coalition members at the Feb. 4 Mayor and City Council meeting. He thanked volunteer coalition members for planning teen and senior gift bags and collecting enough books, hats and gloves to serve more than 1300 families during the holiday season. The 2018 Coalition consisted of representatives from Career Catchers, Gaithersburg HELP, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Grace United Methodist Church, Soroptomist International of Upper Montgomery County, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Gaithersburg Youth Services and Student Union, and two long-time volunteers, Marilyn Opitz and Vicki Thomas. He also thanked the Gaithersburg community that donated more than $25,000 to this effort.

Watkins Mill Road Bridge Project

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is installing large steel beams for the Interstate 270 and Watkins Mill Road bridge project. Motorists will encounter evening single, double and triple lane closures as well as total traffic stoppages for 20 minutes at a time through March. Drivers can expect to encounter single-lane closures starting at 7 p.m., double-lane closures at 9 p.m., and triple-lane closures at 11 p.m. All lanes are expected to be fully open by 5 a.m. For real time commuter conditions, and the latest traffic updates, go to and click on “lane closures.”

Resident registration for the city’s popular summer camps began on Feb. 13. All-day and partial-day options are available in four convenient sessions, providing maximum scheduling flexibility. Offered this year are specialty clinics in crime scene investigation, animation, digital audio and video production, and reading music. Convenient payment plans are available. Comment Sought on Short-Term Rentals

The City of Gaithersburg is seeking feedback on Short-Term Rentals (STRs), which is the renting out of a furnished home, apartment or condominium on a weekly or nightly basis for typically fewer than 30 days. Individuals and residential communities are encouraged to fill out an online survey,, by 5 p.m., Feb. 25. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day With 19th Annual Parade

The City of Gaithersburg, in partnership with The Peterson Companies and RIO Washingtonian Center, will host the 19th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 16. The parade meanders down Grand Corner Avenue at RIO, located near I-370 and Washingtonian Boulevard. Following the parade there will be live entertainment by the Lloyd Dobler Effect on the lakefront plaza until 2 p.m. Free parking is available in three garages along Washingtonian Boulevard.
