Dr. Maria Annette Cook Hayes, 57, mother and dear friend to many, passed peacefully on September 12, 2019 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville, MD. She had spent 58 days battling complications from an undiagnosed brain AVM.
Although Maria grew up in Michigan and received her Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science-Dental Hygiene, and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees from The Ohio State University, she was a DC girl at heart. She owned a private cosmetic dentistry practice in the Kentlands, a community where she and her sons were long-term residents.
In addition to her career, Maria was a passionate yoga student, gardener, world-traveler, cancer survivor, chef, and artist, yet nothing surpassed her pride and commitment to motherhood, or her investment in family and friends. She sought to instill in her sons her own zest for adventure, her commitment to a work-life balance, and the power to make lemonade out of lemons.
Maria is survived by her sons Liam Hayes and Sean Hayes of Gaithersburg, Maryland; mother-in-law, Ernestine Hayes of West Virginia; partner in life, William Howard of Maryland; sister, Corrie King of Michigan; sister-in-law, Rhonda Cook and nieces and nephew Hannah, Rachel, and Cole Cook of South Carolina and Georgia; sister and brother-in-law, Michelle and John Rowan and nephew and niece Jake and Isabella Rowan of Virginia; especially close cousins, Catherine and Donald Ward of Quebec, Canada; and many family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert John Cook, Sr; mother, Cecilia Elaine Cook; brother, Robert John “Bobby” Cook, Jr.; and father-in-law, William H. “Bill” Hayes.
A Celebration of Life service will be planned at a later date.
In lieu of arrangements, please honor Maria by cooking a special meal, taking a yoga class, spending time with a friend or family, traveling, helping someone in need, or following through on any outstanding medical care—and remember to enjoy life with a smile!
