Faizan Khan is bringing a bit of Southern California to Kentlands. Sadly, he cannot import the weather, but what he brings may be equally delicious.
Dog Haus Biergarten—offering signature gourmet hot dogs plus handcrafted sausages, Black Angus beef burgers as well as ImpossibleTM Foods and Beyond Meat® plant-based protein burgers, fried chicken sandwiches and local craft beers—will be the franchisee’s second location.
Launched in Pasadena, California, in 2010, Dog Haus now has more than 30 locations nationwide, and 10 more in development. Khan, who opened Dog Haus Bethesda in 2018, is “happy” with the restaurant’s performance. “The Bethesda location is the number one location in the franchise,” he said.
Why Kentlands? “I chose Kentlands because of the ‘town center’ and family focus,” Khan said. “Every time I’ve come out to the Kentlands, the energy has been palpable. Dog Haus is a family-friendly concept, and I can’t wait to become an integral part of the community.”
Khan, who has been with Microsoft for the past 12 years, working “with some of Microsoft’s largest customers focused on digital transformation enabled by the cloud,” said he has “always been in business and has invested in real estate for around 15 years.” After learning about Dog Haus about four years ago when visiting his native Southern California, “I decided to expand the concept on the East Coast because Dog Haus’ food and culture is just so good.”
“The food is awesome. That was foundational for me because I won’t go to a restaurant unless the food is excellent,” Khan said. “The other thing that attracted me to the concept was the vibe. It’s fun, hip and laid back.” Khan’s wife, Adila, is also his business partner. “She’s focused on customer service within the restaurant,” he said. The couple and their three daughters—17, 13 and 9—relocated to Ashburn, Virginia, about seven years ago. “I thought it would be fun to check out living in another part of the U.S. What better place than D.C. with all of the history, culture and energy,” he explained.
All the family members have favorite menu items, Khan said. His “is the Little Mule burger. My wife’s is the Thai Fighter sausage and my kids’ are the cheeseburger and Soo Cali dog.”
Dog Haus Kentlands, a custom-designed 2,684-square-foot restaurant at 644 Center Point Way in Market Square—will accommodate approximately 80 people, Khan said. “It’s a combination of tables—low and high tops—as well as seating at the bar.” The bar will offer 24 beers on tap and four wines plus “the brand’s signature Haus Cocktails—handcrafted by Phil Wills, as seen on (the television series) ‘Bar Rescue.’” Inside, there will be multiple HD televisions and an outdoor patio will be appropriately dog-friendly.
“We couldn’t be more excited to bring our one-of-a-kind chef-driven creations to Kentlands Market Square,” said Khan. “I have no doubt that the community will love Dog Haus’ menu, but what will really make us stand out is our energetic and fun environment where guests can enjoy their favorite local craft beers and mixologist-created Haus cocktails.”
