Update on Kentlands Market Square

Caren Garfield, Kimco director of development, updated the Mayor and City Council and Planning Commission June 17 on improvements to Kentlands Market Square. “The paseo is completed with the exception of some final plantings and planters and final cleanings, but the under-lit seating and overhead catenary lights are all in place. If you’ve been there at night, it really creates a pretty spectacular new space, so we’re really excited about it,” she said.

Expected openings include MOD Pizza on July 3, Brews and Barrels and Cinépolis this fall, and Tutti Frutti, Dog Haus, Cinco
de Mayo and Berries & Bowls by the end of this year.

Cupcakery Coming to Main Street

Summer just got a little sweeter. Sonia Vee’s Cupcakes is coming to Main Street this summer. Owner and baker Sonia Vee Ekonomo said 344 Main St. was the first space she and her husband looked at, and “we fell in love with the area.” She found Main Street “so peaceful” and loved the “Georgetown feel.” The space, she said, “felt perfect.”

Sonia Vee has been creating her beautiful cupcakes since 2014. It all started after her father passed away. He had worked at a private school and she wanted to thank the staff there for all that they had done for her father. She baked a variety of  cupcakes from scratch, including vegan, and “they loved them. The principal asked, ‘Will you be doing this for a living?’ and a lightbulb went on. This was my first time baking cupcakes,” she said.

When Sonia Vee’s Cupcakes opens in early July, patrons can enjoy cupcakes that will include vegan, gluten-free and sugar-free, as well as six- to eight-inch mini-cakes and coffee. Cake-pops, macaroons and cupcake cones will soon follow. Sonia Vee’s also will offer cupcake catering for all special occasions.

The cupcakery will include a small seating area and a party room perfect for DIY Cupcake Parties for children and adults, birthday parties and bridal showers. For an additional treat, be sure to check out Sonia Vee’s homemade candles and gifts, some scented like cupcakes and other baked goods. To learn more about the cupcakery, visit

Artists on Market on the Move at Summer’s End

The popular pop-up art gallery at 201 Market St. West will be moving at the end of August. Kimco, owners of Kentlands Market Square, has a new tenant coming into the 2,000-square-foot space.

“We just heard that we have to move,” said Jaree Donnelly, Artists on Market creator and exhibiting member artist, “and we want to stay in the neighborhood.”

The art gallery and workspace officially opened on Market Street West in September 2018. “We are so grateful to Kimco for giving us the space and understood from the start that as a pop-up we could get moved out,” Donnelly said. Artists on Market operates under the Kentlands Community Foundation umbrella as an artists’ collective.
