This year, The Town Courier encourages you to support local business, which in turn helps to support local jobs, infrastructure and the community. Shopping local really is the gift that keeps on giving year-round.
According to the Kentlands Shop Small & Local business group, when you spend $100 at a local business, roughly $68 stays in the local economy. Compare this to $100 spent at a national, big box store—only $43 stays in the local economy. And money spent online? Zero is reinvested locally.
Plus, shopping local is more fun. No travel, no fighting big crowds—just good conversations with local shopkeepers, their staff, and the occasional friend or neighbor.
If these gift-giving ideas don’t cover everyone on your holiday list, then stay tuned! Part 2 of “Shop Local This Holiday Season” will be published in our next issue.
Give the Gift of Style
When it comes to fashion, Kentlands has you covered. Great shops like Clover Boutique, 525 Boutique and Lipstick Lounge can help you give your loved ones the gift of style.
Michon Frick, co-owner of the fashion-forward Clover Boutique at 502 Main Street, suggested scarves, hats, jewelry and handbags for the special someones in your life. “Scarves make the perfect gift because they are one size fits all and go with almost everything! … Hats are something that are in style and people don’t think to buy for themselves but love getting as gifts! … Handbags are also a one-size-fits-all item that make a super gift for the girl who has everything!! A new handbag is always a welcomed addition to the closet!” she enthused. Check out Clover’s contemporary take on these great gift ideas.
Owner Cara Copeland suggested giving jewelry and accessories—and fortunately Lipstick Lounge, a designer consignment shop at 212 Main Street, carries both with many items under $25. A place whose tagline is “Where the Savvy Girls shop” of course offers lots of high-end designer items “from Tiffany, David Yurman, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Hermes and many more!,” Copeland said. She is quick to point out that Lipstick Lounge also carries lots of great items in-between.
Melissa Abramson, store manager at 525 Boutique at 113 Market Street, said the Style Loft Cape “is the ‘IT’ accessory for this fall and winter.” In addition to keeping you stylish and warm, Abramson suggested you “rock it over a sweater or over your coat for an extra layer of warmth!”
Other great gift ideas at 525 Boutique include Kate Space handbags and Karen Walker sunglasses. “Shield your eyes from the sun with theses gorgeously designed shades where chic meets eccentric!” said Abramson.
