Food Bank Collects School Supplies
The Greater Urbana Area Food Bank collected school supplies for local students this summer. Thanks to the generosity of the community, 300 Urbana area students are ready for school.
New President for Frederick Chamber
Elizabeth Cromwell, president and CEO of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, has resigned to become the president and CEO of the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce in Virginia. Her last day will be Sept. 14. Rick Weldon, current vice president of Chamber Operations, will become the president and CEO.
Cromwell, an Urbana resident, has been with the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce for four years. Prior to this, she served as the Frederick County Public Library corporate and community partnership director for 12 years.
Urbana Represented Well at Festival of India
The Indian Association of Frederick (IAF) will host its premier event, Festival of India, on Saturday, Sept. 22, 5:30 p.m. at the William R. Talley Rec. Center, 121 N. Bentz St. This 17th annual event will showcase the diversity of India through classical and folk song and dance, clothing, foods and vendor displays. The event is free and open to public.
Performances will represent dance forms from several states in India, as well as quintessential Bollywood moves. Local Urbana talent will participate in the wide range of cultural performances.
Attendees will be invited to sample a variety of Indian food from local Indian restaurants and stores. Delhi – 6 has been a major sponsor of the festival every year.
Vendors include artisans with jewelry, clothing and henna designs, as well as local businesses and community organizations.
IAF, Inc. is a nonprofit volunteer organization of the Indian community in the Frederick area, and many of its executive board members are Urbana residents. The association has been organizing the Festival of India every year since 2002.
Tuscan Acres Subdivision Approved
Tuscan Acres, a proposed three-lot, general commercial subdivision on 11.33 acres located at Green Valley Road and Fingerboard Road, received combined preliminary/final plat approval from the Frederick County Planning Commission on Aug. 8. This stand-alone property is being developed by Fred J. Giordano and F Squared Engineering Corporation, and it is not part of the Monrovia Town Center. Entrance to the subdivision will be located on Green Valley Road.
Bud Otis Runs as Independent
Bud Otis, Frederick County Council president, gathered enough signatures to get back on the ballot for the Nov. 6 general election. Otis is running for one of the two at-large County Council seats.
Polling Place Change for General Election
Frederick County voters who reside in Precinct 07-001 will have a new polling location for the General Election on Nov. 6, 2018.
The polling place is being changed from the Urbana Volunteer Fire Department (UVFD) Social Hall to the new Sugarloaf Elementary School, 3400 Stone Barn Dr., Frederick. The new school offers better accessibility, parking, and space for voting than the UVFD Social Hall. Approximately 2,000 registered voters in Precinct 07-001 will be affected by the change and receive a new voter registration card in the mail.
