All Welcome at Safe Streets Urbana Aug. 17 Meeting
The Safe Streets Urbana committee plans an Aug. 17, 9 a.m. meeting at the Natelli Community Center, 9023 Harris St., to organize support for students walking and biking to school at the start of this academic year.
According to Carey Murphy, Safe Streets Urbana committee member, “The primary goal at this meeting will be to plan out how to be a presence at new crosswalks and new walking routes to school at the start of the school year. There are at least two new routes due to loss of bus transportation. And there should be a new raised crosswalk at Carriage Hill Drive near the Goddard School at the start of the school year. We hope that by having a physical presence at these locations, we can raise driver awareness that more students will be walking as school is back in session AND be able to guide walkers/bikers on the proper ways to cross the street, etc.”
The committee also will discuss holding a monthly Bike and Walk to School Day.
Look for a video to debut this fall on pedestrian and biker safety. The Frederick County Public Schools Department of Transportation will be filming in Urbana next month, and schools will be able to use the video as a teaching tool in September.
