Food Bank Gears Up for Holidays
The Greater Urbana Area Food Bank is gearing up for a busy fall and holiday season. Starting the season off is the annual Scouting for Food campaign. Local Scouts will be placing bags on your doors the first Saturday in November and returning the next Saturday to retrieve donated items. All families in the Urbana, Linganore and Oakdale feeder patterns should have their donations directed to the Urbana Food Bank. Those donations will help 239 families this year.
Continuing a tradition with In10se BBQ, there will be a fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 15, 5 to 10 p.m. at Smoketown Creekside, 400 Sagner Ave., Frederick. In10se will he serving their BBQ specialties and donating proceeds to food bank families.
Another way to help is by donating turkeys or fixings for Thanksgiving. The food bank provided more than 150 complete Thanksgiving dinners to needy in our area last year. You can be a part of that giving this year. Plan to donate any component of the Thanksgiving feast at least a week prior to the holiday. Also needed are themed disposable plates, aluminum pans for the turkey and sides, fresh onions, carrots, potatoes, pounds of butter, sugar, flour and coffee with caffeine.
Next is the Reverse Advent Calendar to benefit food bank families right here in our community. See the flyer on the food bank’s Facebook page, and starting Dec. 1 fill a box with 24 specific items currently needed by the food bank. Deliver to the food bank and know that you have provided the 24 most often requested food bank items.
The food bank will once again be providing Christmas gifts for those in need in the southeastern portion of the county. Trees with gift suggestion tags are located throughout the area at local churches, schools and businesses. Take a tag, buy the suggested gift, put it in a gift bag or wrap it and return it to the food bank or the location where you found the tag no later than Dec. 16. If you would like your group, business or organization to participate in giving this year, call or text Jo at 240.529.4815.
