Sometimes mother does know best. In this case the Urbana MOMS club gathered 150 of their best recipes for a cookbook they hope will keep Frederick County children from going home hungry.
All net proceeds of the cookbook, which is expected to be ready in September, will go directly to the Back Pack program at Hillcrest Elementary School in Frederick. Some of the schools’ students take home a backpack filled with non-perishable goods on Fridays, an idea that resonated with members of the MOMS club.
“Proceeds go directly to kids that really need it. We thought the program is a great idea,” said cookbook committee chair Sonia Bowie.
Taking a mom’s approach to the cookbook’s organization, Bowie said it will look a bit different than a traditional cookbook. Instead of salad, entrée and dessert categories, readers can dive into menu ideas that appeal to busy families. Flip to Backyard BBQs for lime/chili grilled corn on the cob or the Weekend Breakfast tab to find a sausage and egg soufflé and pumpkin/chocolate chip muffins.
Sprinkled throughout the cookbook will be drawings by MOMS club kids, too. “It’s a nice way to get all our members involved,” said Bowie.
More than half of the group’s 70 members contributed recipes and both Gold’s Gym in Frederick and Smoothie King helped out with incentives to get the content and sales off the ground.
Cookbooks are $10 and can be pre-ordered. Checks should be made out to MOMS club of Urbana and mailed to P.O. Box 51, Monrovia, MD 21770. More information: email@example.com or www.momsclubofurbana.com.
