Sixteen candidates have announced their run for the Frederick County Board of Education (BOE).
Finances, diversity and the best possible education for students are the top reasons why many of these candidates say they were persuaded to try to win a seat on the BOE.
Most noticeably, three current members have decided against reelection runs: Daryl Boffman, Michael Schaden and Bonnie Borsa. Only current member Jean Smith of Mt. Airy says she is running again.
Ijamsville’s Colleen Cusimano and Villages of Urbana’s (VOU) Barrie Ciliberti are among the 16 candidates vying for one of the four open BOE seats; a total of seven members serve on the Board.
Because of the large number of candidates in the race, each one is entered in the non-partisan BOE primary election on September 14; however, only the top eight vote getters will move along to the General Election on November 2.
