A local preliminary to Miss Maryland and Miss America, the first-ever Miss Urbana Scholarship Program competition will debut Nov. 16, 4 p.m. at Frederick Community College’s JBK Theater. Four young women are vying for the title of Miss Urbana 2020 and nine are running for the title of Miss Urbana’s Outstanding Teen 2020. A silent auction will precede the competition, 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the JBK Theater lobby.

Thanks to robust local sponsorship, the silent auction will showcase more than 80 items. Featured are a weekend getaway to Ocean City, NBA and WNBA autographed memorabilia, private golf lessons and more.

Urbana resident Sonia Amir Bowie established and directs the new Miss Urbana Scholarship Program, a non-profit 501(c) (3) program with a mission of building up women. In addition to the scholarship program, the non-profit has offered a series of free life skills workshops, including auto care for girls and self-defense. On Sunday, Oct. 27, 1 to 4 p.m., the Miss Maryland Sorority that advances scholarship opportunities for young women in the state will present a Wardrobe & Accessories Trade Show at Urbana Dance Studio, 3317 Worthington Boulevard.

As a first-year local grassroots program, Miss Urbana continues to raise funds for scholarships and collect prizes for winners and all participants. “I can confidently say we will be awarding thousands of dollars in scholarships and have prize packages with a total value of approximately $4000,” said Amir Bowie. “I have to give credit to our amazing sponsors. Many are local Frederick community members, companies and organizations that have stepped up and donated funds for our scholarship awards. They believe in this program that celebrates young women, and we are so grateful.”

Winners of Miss Urbana 2020 and Miss Urbana’s Outstanding Teen 2020 will continue on to the Miss Maryland Competition, held in June at the Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown. Miss Maryland and Miss Maryland’s Outstanding Teen earn additional scholarships and in-kind tuition, along with the chance to compete for the title of Miss America and Miss America’s Outstanding Teen.
