Waltzing for a Cure

Support Urbana resident Al Clapp and healthcare worker Lindsay Goodrich as they dance for a cure in the 2015 Alzheimer’s Association Memory Ball on May 2. In this event, they dance in honor of Al’s wife, Marie Clapp, who has been battling dementia for the past six years. Please join them as they dance for Marie and others with Alzheimers and related dementias. Go online to vote for them, to make a contribution or to purchase tickets to the ball. The evening includes music and dance, beverages and a performance by the Memory Ball Dancers. Event runs from 7 to 11 p.m. on May 2 and will be held at the Walkersville Social Hall. Walk For Williams

May is Williams Syndrome Awareness month, so in honor of those diagnosed with Williams Syndrome, a genetic condition characterized by cardiovascular disease, developmental delays, and learning disabilities, Walk for Williams is being held May 9 right here in Urbana. Held at the Villages of Urbana Community Center, registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by the walk at 10 a.m. This event is both fun and family friendly and all funds go directly to help families affected by Williams Syndrome. Share a Haircut to Help Stop Domestic Violence

From May 4 to 5, Urbana residents can held end domestic violence by getting a haircut at the Hair Cuttery Salon. Hair Cuttery and the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) teamed up for Hair Cuttery’s Share a Haircut program. For every haircut purchased, a free haircut certificate will be donated to a victim of domestic violence through NNEDV’s national network. Healthy Kids Day

The Green Valley YMCA is hosting its annual Healthy Kids Day in collaboration with Frederick Memorial Hospital on Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and will be held on the future site of our newest branch of the YMCA of Frederick County (between Urbana High School and Urbana Middle School). Come check out the community garden as well as family-friendly games, crafts and activities. The event includes pony rides, face painting, food and various vendors related to children’s health. Also, information will be available on YMCA summer camps, swimming lessons and other youth programs. Park in the Urbana Middle School parking lot to gain entrance to the event. Event is free. Giving Garden Opens

May 1 is opening day for the Giving Garden on the property for the future Urbana YMCA, located between Urbana Middle School and Urbana High School. The Giving Garden offers garden plots to the Urbana community to promote healthy eating. The YMCA will donate excess produce to the Greater Urbana Area Food Bank. 2015 Fore the Kids Golf Tournament

The annual Fore the Kids Golf Tournament is slated for May 4 at the Holly Hills Golf Club in Ijamsville. All proceeds from this event benefit the YMCA of Frederick County’s Campaign for Kids initiative. Event begins at noon. Contact Kim Hart at khart@frederickymca.org for more information.

Spring Fling

The Villages of Urbana hosts its annual Spring Fling event for residents on May 16 complete with family fun, bouncy houses, food vendors and more. Event runs 2 to 6 p.m. For more information, call 301.831.4810.

Frederick Kids Triathlon

On May 23, the Green Valley YMCA hosts the annual Frederick Kids Triathlon in collaboration with the YMCA of Frederick County and Racine MultiSports. Mother’s Day Luncheon
