School-Based Summer Camps Offer Fun and Learning

Would you believe it? With the cold temps and our recent blanketing of snow, it finally feels like winter—and it’s time to sign up for summer camp again. Urbana kids are fortunate to have a great variety of camps to choose from, including a number nearby that operate on beautiful school campuses.

Full STEAM Ahead for a Goddard Summer

Summer camps at The Goddard School in Urbana are powered by STEAM—science, technology, the arts, engineering and mathematics. Ten weeks of camp for kids ages one month to 10 years offer hands-on learning through fun activities.

Summer 2019 focuses on beloved children’s authors and storybooks with a “Once upon a time” theme. Kids will explore fairytales, poetry, fables and tall tales, fantasy and mystery, and learn the difference between fiction, non-fiction and science fiction. Campers can write their autobiographies.

CampVentures Abound at Kiddie Academy Urbana

Kids ages two through 12 can enjoy a summer of exploration at the new Kiddie Academy Urbana. The CampVentures program is designed to inspire imagination while reinforcing learning. Campers will enjoy age-appropriate activities, field trips and special visitors.

The two-year-old program is based on hands-on activities that explore themes like “My Neighbors and Me,” “Tell Me a Story,” “Laugh With Me” and “I’m Going on Vacation.” Quality children’s literature, including books that feature sign language and Spanish, is featured.

Preschoolers ages three and four participate in activities focusing on language arts, math, science, technology, creative arts, drama, music, movement and character education. Themes explored include boats or airplanes, ice cream or pizza, insects or flowers, and summer sports or camping.

CampVentures school-aged programs take a project approach. Kids pursue their interests through experiments and activities. Teachers prompt children to use their imaginations, create their own solutions, and investigate themes as they facilitate and guide the learning process. The children arrange a culminating event or project that not only displays their work but celebrates their achievements.

Teachers at Kiddie Academy work to prevent the summer slide. Through fun activities, their summer programs will reinforce what kids have learned in school. For more information, visit kiddieacademy.com/academies/urbana/programs/summercamp. Kiddie Academy Urbana is located at 3401-D Urbana Pike.
