Frank Vetter, founding principal of Urbana Middle School and current principal of Middletown Middle School, was seriously injured in an accident while riding his bike.
He is the husband of Shannon Vetter, Villages of Urbana Seahawks swim team head coach.
At press time (July 20) Vetter was in serious but stable condition at R. Adams Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, according to hospital spokeswoman Cindy River.
Police reports indicate Vetter was riding his bike July 18 eastbound on Lilypons Road and attempted to make a turn north onto Md. 85. Police said the 42-year-old man failed to stop at the stop sign and was hit by a 2005 Ford Escape in the northbound lane about 11:30 a.m.
Lisa A. Hughes, 45 of Adamstown was driving the SUV that struck Vetter. She and her 11-year old daughter who was also in the car were not injured in the collision, police said.
Frederick County Public Schools spokeswoman Marita Loose said the Vetter family had no comment on the incident.
“At the family’s request going forward we will not be making any more comment. He remains hospitalized and is making progress,” Loose said.
